In the beginning, wagers were placed on cotton rates that were sent from the Bombay Cotton Exchange to the New York Cotton Exchange. Due to its ease of use & possibility for large rewards, the game expanded to include betting on random numbers & gained popularity among Mumbai's working class. When the New York Cotton Exchange stopped sending cotton rates to Bombay in 1961, other ways of figuring out winning numbers emerged. Kalyanji Bhagat's Matka, which involved selecting random numbers from a pot, was born as a result of this.
