Jokers can be used to represent any card, so when they are successfully melded into sets or sequences that contain high-ranking cards, the point totals can be greatly increased. The possible scores of their opponents should also be considered by players; if an opponent is about to go out, it might be prudent to play defensively by strategically discarding or holding onto lower-value cards to keep them from finishing their melds.
